As Calgarians know, snowstorms in September aren’t unheard of. And while the last couple of years have been fairly warm, it’s pretty unlikely that we’ll be seeing a frost free winter anytime soon. Here’s a list of the winter plumbing tips you need to get done before the frost settles in for half a year.
Prepare Outdoor Faucets. Before the first freeze, you’ll want to roll up all your garden hoses and pack them away into the garage. This will prevent water from freezing inside the tubing and causing cracks and leaks. Locate the water supply leading out of your home, and turn it off — you won’t need to water the grass until spring anyways. If you’d like, you can cover outdoor faucets. It doesn’t take long, and it will help to protect them from winter damage.
Inspections and Repairs. This is a good time to have all your pipes inspected. You should be calling the Plumbing Paramedics to service your furnace before the winter months anyways, and while we’re there, we’d be happy to check for any leaks, complete any necessary repairs, and get your home winter ready.
Wrap Exposed Pipes. If you have any exposed pipes or pipes running through unheated areas of your home, now is the time to buy pipe insulation (or heat tape) and wrap them up. It’s also important to know where and how to turn off all the water to your home. In the event of an emergency (such as a burst pipe or a power outage that plunges your home into below freezing temperatures), you may need to be able to locate this shut off quickly.
Is your home winter ready? With our harsh Calgary winter, it’s important that every homeowner has their furnace inspected and their plumbing prepped. The experts at the Plumbing Paramedics can help. Just follow these winter plumbing tips or whether you need a checkup for your hot water tank, your furnace serviced, or you just want a professional to inspect your plumbing before the cold comes, we’re only a phone call away.
